History of illustration of the Rubaiyat

FitzGerald’s Rubaiyat is probably the most widely illustrated of all literary works. The first illustrated edition was published in the USA in 1884, by the Boston firm of Houghton Mifflin, with illustrations by Elihu Vedder[]. Since that date, there have been some 300 different illustrated editions, (excluding reprints) with over 130 known illustrators. To the best of our knowledge, no other written work has enjoyed so many artistic interpretations of its contents.

The history of Rubaiyat illustration is discussed in detail in our book The Art of Omar Khayyam.  This contains many examples of the work of different illustrators.  Click here for a list of key illustrators, with links to other web based information on them where this is available,.
