             in the year that marks

  • 200th anniversary of FitzGerald’s birth in 1809.

FitzGerald’s Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

is probably the best known poem in the world.

It has influenced millions of readers and writers.

It deserves a special celebration.

The moving finger writes, and having, writ, Moves on.

Oh come with old Khayyam, and leave the wise, To talk.

One thing is certain that life flies.

Tis all a chequer-board of nights and days,

Where destiny with men for pieces plays.

Here with a loaf of bread beneath the bough,

A flask of wine, a book of verse - and Thou.
